| Provisioning PocketLearn Viewers and Content |
PocketLearn Viewers are available for "offline" viewing on several families of devices. Today,
that list of devices includes the Pocket PC (and qualifying Win CE
devices), Windows Mobile for Smartphones, Java/MIDP phones, and the Windows
PC. Because each environment is unique, there are differences in the
way that PocketLearn Viewers and content (titles) are
provisioned. For example, Windows Mobile Smartphone and Pocket PC
users can use their PC's browser to download desired PocketLearn titles to
their desktop computers and then use a "sync cable" to transfer them to their
device's file system. Once on the device, the PocketLearn Viewer can open
the titles from their location in the file system. In contrast, Java
phones typically don't have the "sync cable" option (or even a file system!),
so they must provision all software and PocketLearn titles directly from the
web. This type of provisioning is referred to as "Over The Air" or OTA
provisioning. And, for a number of other technical reasons, the Java
PocketLearn Viewer had to tightly integrate the PocketLearn web site. In
fact, the viewer integrates its own browser to provide access to the title
repository on the web site. Windows and Windows Mobile viewers do not
need to integrate a browser, as the PocketLearn Viewer works in harmony with
the browsers in these environments.
E-Commerce
For security and consistency reasons, all PocketLearn E-Commerce activity for
purchasing of title and software must be transacted on the full web site.
After completing the transaction, the purchaser receives an email with the
information needed to provision the title or software. In cases where a
download is required, the email will also include a link to the purchased item
and a 10-character code that is used to provision the
downloaded product directly on the device. Windows Mobile and
Pocket PC users may navigate to the PocketLearn site using their browsers and
submit the code on the Purchase page to begin the download. Java phone
users can obtain titles directly using the PocketLearn viewer application
by selecting "Purchase Title" from the main menu.
Descriptions below for "direct" provisioning of software or content assume
Internet connectivity for the device. We can only address provisioning
from the PocketLearn web site. Because title publishers have ultimate
control of their creations, when they submit "for purchase" titles to the
PocketLearn web site, they may opt to redirect the purchase transaction to
another web site. In such cases, they should provide instructions for
provisioning their titles. Below, we describe the details of provisioning
in the various PocketLearn supported environments.
